A Journey to the Deepest Corners of China — to Personally Inspect the Factory Behind Our New Project In this article, I’ll share the real steps and key details involved in inspecting a Chinese supplier.
Why It's Important to Personally Inspect a Chinese Manufacturer
Choosing a supplier in China isn’t just a matter of clicking a button on Alibaba. A real inspection begins when you’re ready to spend six hours traveling just to see the production with your own eyes. For us, this trip was especially critical — we were launching a new product with existing patents and serious plans for development.
Getting to the “Middle of Nowhere”: 6 Hours to the Factory
The journey started at Shenzhen Bay Railway Station. After a 4-hour train ride and another 2 hours by car, I arrived in the heart of China’s industrial zone. So remote, there was no airport nearby — only railway access and local transportation.
Train Ticket Registration: How It Works in China
Even if you buy your ticket online, you still need to pick it up at the station counter with your passport. In my case, it went smoothly, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
Foreigners are required to show their passport.
If you’re not “expensing the ticket” through your company, you can still travel using just your passport — the system already “sees” your booking.
The Second Important Check: The Restroom
This might sound funny, but one of my first questions at the factory was: “Where’s the restroom?” It’s not just about hygiene — it’s a good way to check whether your hosts have actually been on the factory floor or are just pretending. If they don’t know where it is — that’s a red flag.
Production Tour: From Raw Materials to Packaging
The factory produces cleaning agents, including:
Hydrochloric acid
Caustic soda
Sodium hydroxide
The production process was impressive:
Clean laboratory conditions
Well-organized storage areas
Product quality control
A tidy packaging line
ISO certification
The factory also has on-site dormitories and a canteen — typical for Chinese factories in remote areas.
How We Found This Supplier: Experience from Amazon
The supplier was found by my former Amazon business partner after he couldn’t locate the right product on Alibaba. My team stepped in, found a manufacturer via the Chinese version of the platform, and helped establish communication in Mandarin.
He had been trying to do everything himself through WeChat and GPT-based translators, but the language barrier slowed the project down. Eventually, we agreed on a partnership — I became the China-based representative, taking over communication and inspections.
Why You Should Consider Outsourcing Negotiations in China
If you have a great idea but find yourself wasting time on communication — bring in the experts. This could be your in-house staff, or companies like Unreal China, who can:
Find a supplier
Inspect the factory
Negotiate in Chinese
Handle quality control and logistics
Final Thoughts
A trip to a Chinese factory isn’t just a visit. It’s an audit of the product, production conditions, staff, and your partners’ honesty. Sometimes, only a face-to-face meeting can clear doubts and lay the foundation for strong collaboration.
